Lockley’s Pylon
Mount Hay Road, Leura
If you’re chasing that ‘top of the world’ feeling without the soul-crushing incline of a valley climb, the Lockleys Pylon Walk might be your perfect trail. Hidden at the end of the unsealed Mount Hay Road in Leura, this 7km return track swaps the usual dense forest for wide-open, windswept heathland.
The trail undulates across the plateau, passing the oddly shaped rock outcrops known as The Pinnacles before reaching the ‘Pylon’ itself - a small, distinctive peak named after J.G. Lockley, a journalist who helped save the nearby Blue Gum Forest in the 1930s. From the summit, you’re rewarded with an incredible 360-degree panorama of the Grose Valley, with the golden sandstone walls of Mount Hay and Mount Banks standing like sentinels across the gorge. It’s quiet, expansive, and particularly magic in spring when the wildflowers turn the ridge into a sea of color.
